Protecting our Environmental Heritage

Canada’s North is home to spectacular scenery, unique wildlife and pristine wilderness. The Government of Canada wants to ensure that sensitive Northern ecosystems are protected for future generations.

Canada, together with its Northern partners, already has rigorous environmental assessment and regulatory processes in place to ensure development does not occur at the expense of the environment.

Canada is already at the forefront of several international efforts to study the impacts on both the Arctic and Antarctic of a changing climate, and is investing to help Northerners adapt to these impacts. The Government is making plans for a new Arctic Research Station that will help solidify Canada’s leadership role in the field of Arctic science.

The Government is also promoting clean and efficient new energy technologies in the North, reducing pollution in Arctic waters, protecting environmentally sensitive northern areas and cleaning up environmental damage at abandoned mines.
